Every number on this site is derived from real menus — items a cafe actually lists, with the dietary labels the cafe actually printed. No surveys, no vibes — currently 312,643 menu items across 5,251 cafes.
For each cafe we count menu items explicitly tagged for a dietary need. A cafe's gluten-free score is the share of its menu tagged gluten-free (items marked “GF on request” count, and are shown separately as “on request”). The same maths applies to dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian. We deliberately count only explicitlabels — if a kitchen can do it but the menu doesn't say so, it doesn't count until the menu (or the owner) says so.
A cafe gets a full score once its menu carries at least 6 tagged items across 2+ dietary dimensions. Below that we show striped indicativebars — visible, but flagged as thin evidence. Menus with no dietary labels at all aren't scored.
Area scores use pooled coverage: all tagged items across the area's cafes divided by all menu items in the area. Bigger menus weigh more — “28% gluten-free” means 28% of everything on menus there is explicitly gluten-free. Areas need at least 3cafes with analysed menus before they're ranked, and the national cafes leaderboard only includes fully scored cafes, so a one-item menu can't headline at “100% gluten-free”.
Area thresholds run slightly higher because pooled numbers are naturally diluted by big menus.
Menus are extracted from cafes' own websites and ordering pages, then parsed item-by-item with the dietary labels they carry (GF, GFO, DF, V, VG and friends). Listings, addresses and ratings come from public business data. Menus are re-scanned continuously; each cafe page shows when it was last analysed. Vegan items are not auto-counted as vegetarian — we report exactly what the menu marks.
The fastest fix is labelling: if your kitchen already does gluten-free or dairy-free, mark it on the menu and we'll count it on the next scan — or claim your listing and send us the current menu directly.
